Mexico Summer Program

The Mexico program is seven weeks long, from the beginning of July to mid-August. The program offers participants the opportunity to witness the economic and political struggles of the poor in both urban and rural Mexico..  Similar to the eight-month programs, the Mexico summer program includes preparation, immersion, and follow-up. The program cost is $2600, which includes your flight, food, accommodation, and program costs both in Canada and in Mexico.

Preparation

Before leaving Canada, the group meets in Ontario for six days to participate in workshops on building community, developing group goals, enhancing awareness and analysis of poverty and injustice, and learning about the political and economic situation in Mexico.

Orientation

After preparation the group will fly to Mexico City. For three days they will meet with local social justice organizations to give them an in-country orientation. The group will have time to visit historical sites and explore Mexico City.

Urban Immersion

The group then leaves for the Cuernavaca Center for Intercultural Dialogue on Development (CCIDD). This week long program aims to give participants an experiential understanding of urban poverty in Mexico. The group will stay at the Center, participating in a daily workshops and day excursions.

Rural Immersion

The group will travel to the rural town Tlapa in the state of Guerrero. After spending a few days in the city to meet local organizations, participants will move to live with families in a nearby indigenous village, Tototepec.  For two and a half weeks participants will live with families in the village - participating in farming, cooking and family activities.

Debriefing

Participants spend five days together in Ontario to reflect on the experience and articulate their learning in order to share with their communities when they return home.
